Lourdes Portillo, the Mexican-born, Chicana-identified filmmaker who crafted nuanced movie and video works that heart the feelings and circumstances of numerous Latinx experiences, died on Saturday, April 20 at her house in San Francisco. She died peacefully, surrounded by her three sons and a youthful sister, in keeping with a good friend.

In a 2023 Deadline interview, she talked about her work and want to carry elements of her background to mild.

“I stay in San Francisco, so there’s a sure activism that goes on right here. And in these years – within the ‘70s – there have been quite a lot of immigrants from Latin America, from Argentina, from Brazil, from Mexico, and there was quite a lot of injustice being perpetrated on them.
